And it’s not what you may be thinking…I actually wasn’t eating junk food that was throwing me off my game. Truth be told, I’ve only shared this story with a few people that I’m very close to...and even when I tell them this tale, I feel more than a little embarrassed. It was one of the worst experiences of my entire career.... ...but ultimately, it became a defining moment in my approach to tennis training, particularly how I viewed the impact proper nutrition would have on me as a player and what lengths I would go to in order to help others in the future. I was playing in the 2005 Nasdaq Open (the Miami Masters) qualifying, which at the time was the 5th largest and most prestigious tournament in the world, and I had decided to test a new “extreme” diet protocol... You see, a few months prior to the 2005 Nasdaq Open, I stumbled across a unique diet routine that promised improved fitness levels and performance by changing when and how much to eat each day. I even did a private one on one phone consultation with the heralded author where I paid big bucks to learn this unique eating philosophy. Excited about this new diet I dove straight in eager to see the benefits...I was so excited that I actually experimented with it during the 2005 Nasdaq Open. On day 1 of the qualifying rounds, I played lights out beating Jan Michael Gambill, who had a career high of #14 in the world. My energy was good and I stuck with this new diet routine of eating light during the day and heavy at night. Well, day 2 came and disaster struck. I was playing another talented player, Christophe Rochus, who had a career high world ranking of #38. I was playing lights out again moving him all over the court and up 4-1 in the first set. And then I hit a wall... No energy... Sweating profusely... No strength in my muscles... The hot Florida sun beating down on me... Turns out I had no energy stores left because I flat out wasn’t eating enough food for breakfast and lunch each day... I was starving. I was lightheaded. I felt like I was going to pass out on the court. I had to end points early and just made stupid unforced errors because I had bonked. I went down in flames losing 6-4, 6-1. Needless to say. I was crushed. I had the chance to qualify for one of the premier tournaments in the world, and I choose to play around with a “weird” diet that hurt rather than helped my performance. And let me tell you, it s a lonely, frustrating feeling to experiment and fail…to lose matches because of a diet mistake that kept me from reaching my tennis goals… I know it seems obvious that I should have never tinkered with my eating plan during such an important event, but something really good came out of it... At that very moment I decided that I was going stop trying such extreme diets (I had also tried raw, vegetarian, vegan diets and others nutrition plans while on the tour) and would find common sense nutrition solutions that would give me the energy, strength, endurance, and recovery I desired. So even though I crashed and burned at the Nasdaq Open, it was a pivotal moment in my playing career where I decided enough was enough.
