By winning the event, O Sullivan broke the record of the most Masters titles, which he had jointly held with Stephen Hendry before the tournament. This was also the first time that the title had been successfully defended since Paul Hunter won the event in 2001 and 2002. Marco Fu compiled the highest break of the tournament, scoring a 141 in his semi-final match against O Sullivan.
