Being able to work with it and develop a sense of how such an orchestra functions can be extremely important for their future development. ‘It can be very beneficial for a young conductor to realise that at this level all technical problems have been solved, as long as you yourself have achieved a certain level of technique. It’s not about what kind of interpretation you want. Instead, it’s about how you go about getting exactly what you want to hear from the orchestra. It’s down to the conductor to make use of the professionalism of the musicians and try to get the very best he can out of them.’
