Although commonly referred to as the red velvet ant (and in some cases cow killer ant), this name is misleading because velvet ants are actually wasps. Female cow killer ants are typically seen running somewhat erratically on the ground, especially on bare or sandy areas in the warm summer months. These pests will occasionally enter structures for insect prey. Male velvet ants are often found on flowers, although some species are nocturnal. Female velvet ants have a very potent sting that has earned them the nickname "cow-killer." Male red velvet ants lack a stinger but have wings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-O2a7UpBn8 We know how to lift your mood!
