Hello! Here’s a peek into part of my design process. I have some design projects in the making and thought it’d be fun to film and share how I usually go about turning design ideas into actual garments! Every artist and designer has a different way of creating, and the series of steps in this vlog is more or less how I usually start out. I didn’t go into much detail in the video, but for anyone that wants to know more about the process, I’ve written more info here: ♥ Designing and Sketching - This is when I start planning the garment. There are a lot of details to consider, like who will wear it and where will it be worn, what fabric should be used, what design would best fit the occasion, etc. In this stage, I will usually do research sessions, not just into how the clothes will look, but more importantly, how it will be constructed. ♥ Making a Pattern - I usually make patterns in one of two ways/techniques. The first is through flat pattern making. The second is through draping. For some garments, I’ll stick to only one method. For others, I’ll use a mix of both. ♥ Making a Toile - Once I have my pattern ready, I’ll transfer it onto muslin fabric and create a mockup to test the proportions and fit. If there are adjustments to be made (which happens 100% of the time, unless you re a skilled pattern cutter or a pattern genius! 😂), I’ll mark it on the toile then transfer it to the pattern. I sometimes end up making several toiles until I m satisfied with the way it looks and fits. I color grade my pattern drafts in order for me to be able to see what edits I made and which lines belong to the most updated version of the pattern. ♥ Pressing/Ironing - An underestimated part of making garments! Almost every step of the process involves ironing at some point. Before cutting up any fabric, I like pressing and steaming away all wrinkles. Video editing is magical and makes the process seem a whole lot smoother and faster than it is in real life. I used a stopwatch to time myself while working to record how long it really takes. { coat dress | pattern making and toile making - 14 hours } { cropped jacket, top and pants | pattern making and toile making - 9 hours } 🎨 instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thestyleaholic 🎨 kofi: https://ko-fi.com/thestyleaholic 🎨 email: connect@thestyleaholic.com 🎨 website: https://thestyleaholic.com ♦ timestamps 00:00 fashion design vlog intro 00:25 designing a coat dress 1:40 making a toile 3:43 designing a cropped jacket look 4:36 draping a toile ♫ music: Music from Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/brock-hewitt-stories-in-sound/ages-ago License code: YGYLCBZTXHAJHTS3 Music from Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/brock-hewitt-stories-in-sound/green-fields License code: YQBIZVFXJKEOSAPN Music by Anja Kotar - September - https://thmatc.co/?l=B4FD10ED Please note that some of the links in this description may be affiliate links.
