My Toucan Has Diabetes | Signs of Diabetes in Toucans

My male Toco Toucan Rocko is 10 years old (hatched July 2011) and was diagnosed as pre-diabetic in early 2021. We attempted to change his diet from mainly non-citrus fruits to an incorporation of vegetables like beets and carrots as a base with some low-sugar fruits like berries, melons, pears, and peaches. Unfortunately, this diet change seemed to have no effect on him being then diagnosed with diabetes in October 2021. After giving insulin orally through December 2021, we realized we were not seeing significant enough improvement and made an appointment with a more specialized vet an hour away. Here is what I ve learned thus far about his diagnosis of diabetes and the signs leading up to it that I did not recognize individually until the excessive water drinking symptom. I hope this video can reach more people who keep and care for toucans because battling iron storage disease and diabetes with diet feels like an impossible task with today s information.
