While services like Google Maps have done a lot for providing backcountry travelers with a rough idea of the terrain layout in a new area, unless you buy a map specific to your chosen backcountry zone, you're not going to get the level of detail needed to safely plan travel in an unfamiliar zone. Enter Fatmap, a new app that is adding maps of ski areas and backcountry zones from around the world with a level of detail that is 40 times more granular than anything else currently available – meaning you can drill down to sniff out individual problem areas like cliffs, gullies, and creeks and know the pitch, aspect, and elevation of every part of your chosen run before you even step on top of it. Maps can be downloaded to your phone, which means they can be pulled up in areas where you don't even have service. You can also GPS track your outings inbounds or out, and pull up recent observations by fellow app users who've been riding in the same area. Fatmap is available for download on both Apple's iTunes and the Google Play store, and is a much more productive use of your phone than taking a screenshot of Google Maps for your next backcountry outing.
