This is the final piece in La Bonne Chanson – nine settings of poems from Paul Verlaine’s collection of the same name. Full of harmonic complexity, Fauré’s song cycle shocked Saint-Saëns but delighted Proust when it was first heard in 1894. Accompanied with great vitality by pianist Chris Reynolds, Emily conveys all the thrilling energy and optimism of this song, whose lyrics celebrate the dual joys of love and the return of spring.
