“I’ve been playing André Mathieu’s music for 40 years,” says Canadian pianist Alain Lefèvre. “I’ve always championed it because it has its own place in the history of composition." He joins with Quebec native Hélène Mercier in an album devoted to this composer s works: https://w.lnk.to/amcLY André Mathieu was born in Montreal in 1929 and died there in 1968. A pianist-composer, he first made his name as a child prodigy in Canada and in New York – playing Carnegie Hall at the age of 10. He was hailed as a ‘new Mozart’ and Sergei Rachmaninov – often cited as an influence on Mathieu’s music – declared him “a genius, more so than I am”. The three works on this album – performed in arrangements by Achilleas Wastor – all date from the 1940s.
