Gopro Hero 8 Black versus Insta360 One R Action cam review︱Cross Training Enduro

Are you interested in 360 degree cameras and action cameras? The Insta 360 One R is recently new competitor aiming to challenge Gopro s supremacy in the market. The Gopro Hero 8 Black is now widely regarded as the best action cam and after a solid year of use I would agree... in almost every respect it s the leading action camera nowadays. But Insta360 offers a modular camera that can be three different types of camera. There s the base model action cam which is cheaper than the Gopro Hero 8 Black. There s the twin edition which has the second lens turning the action cam into a proper 360 degree camera. Then there s the one inch model with the large sensor and Leica lens to maximise quality. How does the base model Insta360 fare against the Gopro? Quite well. The Insta360 can match or come close to the Gopro in many respects: auto exposure, colours, image stabilisation, battery life and colour depth. Not bad for a substanially cheaper camera. Unfortunately the modular nature of the Insta360 means you are using a substantially smaller touch screen, and the menu is a bit more fiddly than the Gopro Hero 8 Black. The sharpness of the image and video bitrate aren t quite as good, and the audio is the only real negative, especially once the wind noise begins. Insta360 definitely need to work on their audio quality and wind noise. Now we come to the first of the Insta360 One R’s bad bits. Insta360 says the mounting case needs to be in place for the water resistance to count. It doesn’t actually cover all the ports, but presumably applies more pressure to keep the internal seals tight.You don’t need a case at all with a GoPro Hero 8 Black, and it is certified to 10m rather than 5m. How does the base model Insta360 fare against the Gopro Twin? Now things get interesting! If you want quality 360 degree footage, ideally you need two cameras from Gopro. Where as you can save a lot of money with just one camera from Insta360. Which will suit you better? It depends on your expectations. In action cam mode the Gopro Hero 8 Black does have slightly higher quality than the Insta360. And from all the research we ve done, it s a similar scenario with the 360 cameras. The Gopro Max does have the edge in video and audio quality, but it s not a big difference. I think for many everyday users the much cheaper price and modular nature of the Insta360 will win here. But the modular design is a success and gives you the flexibility of adding further modules, like the One-inch Edition. If you re prepared to accept its foibles and compromises, it s a good option for those who want to dabble in both 4K and 360-degree video.The Insta360 one inch model? I didn t get to test this so can t really comment. And I can t find any truly objective reviews about it. Sorry guys. In summary? If you are really going for top quality, get the Gopro Hero 8 Black. Happy with good quality and very user friendly features? Get the Insta360. A quick note, my viewers have indicated they want to know where products are made and by who. Insta360 is a rapidly growing Chinese company that now has offices in other countries. We’re also slightly concerned about how the seals will cope with months or years of use, given this is a brand new design. Insta360 fires out inventive cameras at a rate of knots, and sometimes it pays to take things slower. Their cameras are made in China. Neither its standard 4K footage or 360-degree video are a match for those cameras, while its small screen and software issues also make it less user-friendly. Gopro is an American company, their cameras are also made in China but cameras intended for the US market will soon be made elsewhere due to trade embargoes.
