In this tennis lesson, Jeff Salzenstein breaks down Roger Federer’s tennis forehand and footwork. Likewise, he performs a detailed pro forehand comparison between Federer and Shapovalov, where he shares one big key on why Federer moves more efficiently to hit his inside in or out forehands. He takes his back leg behind the front leg, as other pro tennis players do like Rafael Nadal. Shapovalov loads his outside leg, and he’s pretty much square before making contact with his hips facing towards the side fence. There’s nothing wrong about this movement ; however, Jeff considers that it’s more efficient to move around the ball without turning sideways right away, like Federer does. Roger Federer comes out of the split step, and then he shuffles first. Federer keeps his hips facing the net, followed by another little shuffle move. As Federer shuffles, his hips are about 45 degrees angle towards the net post. Federer is moving around the ball, and it’s not until he lands that Roger’s stepping in with a square stance and his hips finally face sideways. Federer is circling the ball before he steps in to hit his forehand. This is a very different way to move than what Denis Shapovaov is doing. Jeff encourages junior and club tennis players to model Roger Federer’s movement, especially when they’re running around the backhand and hitting an inside in or out forehand.
