TENNIS FOREHAND: Hit Perfect Forehands in 5 Steps (ATP PRO) Jeff Salzenstein, Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, shares five simple steps to hit a perfect tennis forehand. Jeff performs a detailed pro analysis on Marin Cilic’s tennis forehand and breaks it down into the following five steps: 1. Ready Position When Cilic is preparing, his arms are relaxed, bent and by the side of his body. His racquet head is tilted, and not on edge mainly because Cilic has a semiwestern forehand grip. This shows relaxation before he begins his swing. 2. First Move Cilic pulls off his left arm across his body, and keeps his elbow away from the body. Cilic’ s racquet tip also stays up during the first move. 3. Swing Path Cilic drops his racquet head to a certain level, where it stays pretty level with the upcoming ball. His racquet barely drops underneath the ball prior to contact, it’s coming from his waist, and then he’s driving straight to the ball. Cilic has a flatter swing path. 4. Extension and Hand Turn Extension is key and Cilic does an awesome job in this area. He extends out towards the target after making contact. Now, Cilic also has a great hand turn as the palm of his hand turns over. Notice how the tip of the racquet is pointing towards the net and up to the sky. Jeff suggests his students to focus on having an early hand turn on their forehand. 5. Finish Cilic finishes high with the hand above his shoulder, primarily because he’s standing four feet behind the baseline. Therefore, if you’re standing deep in the court, make sure to finish higher on your forehand. In conclusion, Marin Cilic has a smooth and solid technique on his forehand. Now, if you integrate these five steps, you’re going to absolutely transform your forehand.
