Future members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, known as the Mounties, learn to work in frigid temperatures before they begin their service. At the RCMP Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan, future Mounties run outside in their uniforms to get a feel for what it s like to pursue a suspect or track a missing person in extreme conditions. Some cadets get the opportunity to accompany a police dog on their outdoor run when a dog and its handler are at the Academy. When senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan visited the Academy in December 2019 — on a day when the temperature dipped to about 25 degrees below zero — he joined a group of cadets who got to go on a run with Baylee, a retired police dog handled by Constable Brent Bates, who spent seven years with her in the field.
