http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com http://tractionerag.com Our latest helmet fail - rusted brackets in this Oneal 10 Series Carbon review. After a strap fell off my Suomy helmet due to rust a few years ago, our group has been checking our helmets regularly for rust. Scott was the next victim, with his top of the line Leatt helmet showing heavy rust after only 13 months. Our latest case? An Oneal 10 Series Carbon Race helmet review. This is the rust after eight rides and about five months. And helmet rust has also occurred with Fox, Airoh, Bell, Leatt, Jitsie, M2R, Progrip, Fly, Oneal, Acerbis, Just1, Kali, Suomy.... The helmet was never near salt water or ridden in the rain. It was ventilated after each ride. Thankfully there was a refund and another brand was purchased. Have you encountered helmet rust? I am not saying this will happen to every Oneal helmet. But rusted brackets occur in a small but significant number of cases.. and can correlate with helmets made in China. And it can lead to the strap pulling off, as happened to this Oneal 10 Series helmet at around three to four years old. It s a widespread problem. To date we have seen reports of rust in all of these brands. Why does it happen? Many manufacturers are just using mild steel for these brackets, and applying a very thin rustproof coating. It rapidly wears through, and then the rust starts. We recommend checking your helmet regularly, especially just before the warranty runs out. Any rust? Get a refund. There is a strong correlation with helmets made in China, rust in helmets, and this sort of cost cutting is not unusual. But it does happen on more expensive helmets too, not just in this Oneal 10 Series Carbon review. And even the top shelf Italian made Airohs were failing a few years ago when they experimented with alloy brackets that corroded rapidly. And they refused to replace helmets when the brackets failed and straps pulled off. Are their brands without this issue? Yes, I have yet to see a single report of the Japanese made Shoei and Arai helmets rusting. And some guys have even sent pics of their 20 year old helmets in. But in the meantime, we recommend checking those brackets regularly, and do your research every time you buy a new helmet. Here ends our Oneal helmet review.
