One home gave me such an instant headache, that I had to do all my consulting outside in the fresh air because I could not handle the strong smoke in the home (and I do not have asthma or anything else that would make me overly sensitive to it.) Mel, who was on site with me, had a full blown asthma attack. IMAGINE the impact that home was having on the birds, and these were well intentioned owners who "smoked in the other room", a hallway away from the bird area. But the entire home smelled of smoke. Birds would come into classes reeking of smoke with dull feathers, sometimes light plucking on the legs or under the wings. It was something I felt very uncomfortable talking about, because I felt like I was there to talk behavior, not medical, nor did it feel like my place to be like "soooo yeah, if you could stop smoking, that d be greattttt..." but I soon found there was a major overlap there and having Mel on site with us helped because her work focuses so much on that very overlap. She s called in to work on behavior modification when it s almost always something stemming from a medical issue; which, because of her background in vet care and vet school (she currently works with two of the major avian vets in Melbourne) she is able to speak up on without hesitation. That s why I asked her to film this video with me. She sees this issue more than me, and therefore documents it more, and I felt like it was something we both feel passionately about but that she is more used to addressing.
